Energy savings that the country requires are the result of many events. Poor management of water resources for hydroelectric power generation and the lack of a more diversified energy matrix for the country are some of the causes of future electricity rationing. Renewable energy is a completely feasible alternative for our country, not only to meet the electricity demand but also to become an interesting option for a truly sustainable and clean transportation. Transportation remains one of the greatest contributor to greenhouse gases emission, which in turn is the main cause of global warming whose consequences are more unpredictable and warmer climates.
The project involves the development of a one-person vehicle with a hybrid driving force consisting in a photovoltaic solar system and a human powered transmission system. Energy supplements can satisfy different demands of load (from flat roads to 12% slopes). The photovoltaic system is made up of a panel of 350 Wp, a battery of 20 Ah and 48 Vdc (960 Wh) and a 1200 W electric motor. The system has reported an autonomy of 2 hours (when only driven by the solar system at 40 km / h on flat roads). However, under direct sunlight and with support of the pilot, the vehicle may overcome the aforementioned constraint.
From the mechanical point of view, the steering and traction systems are worth of mentioning. The design included a lateral steering ensuring that both systems work in unison without conflicting operations. This project was the result of an interdisciplinary joint venture of students from undergraduate programs of Mechanical Technology, Electrical Technology and Electronics Engineering.
