In this study, we propose a recommendation model for experimental protocols based on the user's context of use. As a case study, we analyze 107 experiments related to 5 experimental protocols of soil mechanics laboratory tests in the Civil Engineering field, according to ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) standards. Our approach starts with the formal specification of the experimental protocol and proposes a representation model that describes the entities involved in the scientific product. This representation model contributes to the formalization of the experimental protocol in a previously under-explored domain of knowledge. Building upon the representation model, we present a recommendation model that leverages the context of use to identify the entities that characterize the context in which a user performs a new experiment, reproduces, repeats, or audits previously performed experiments. This also addresses the currently limited visibility of recommendations for this type of products in the explored repositories of experimental protocols. Using the two models, we develop a software prototype, and validate it using test cases. The results of the validation show that our content-based recommendation strategy achieves satisfactory results, providing recommendations to the user.
