La diabetes es una enfermedad de alta prevalecía. la FID estima que para el año 2025 habrá una población de diabéticos de 300 millones en el mundo. Se ha considerado que el 15% de los diabéticos se ven afectados con pie diabético, complicación que puede desencadenar amputaciones. La aparición de úlceras es causada por diversos factores como son: neuropatía, vasculopatía, aumento de la presión plantar, fricciones del pie dentro del calzado, deformidades, compresión permanente de tejidos blandos en las zonas de mayor presión.
