In the War of Independence, few Novo-Hispanic women figure in the great historical narrative. Popular culture exalts them in the festive harangues of each September 15, when the voice of politicians remembers Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, Gertrudis Bocanegra and Leona Vicario. These women have occupied a prominent place in patriotic celebrations; however, we know very little about their lives. In this context, we present a review of Anne Staples' Where are you, what are you doing, Leona Vicario, a work that explores the figure of Leona Vicario through a critical study of the “daily life” of a Novo-Hispanic woman. This text highlights her political and personal legacy, revealing a facet uncommon in women of her time: the firmness of her convictions and her dedication to the cause of Independence.
